Alright – you’ve got an app or a game to promote, you need a video script, and you wanna use ChatGPT to jazz up your scriptwriting game.
In this hands-on guide, we’re diving deep into how ChatGPT can supercharge your scripting process. We’ll cover everything from firing up your brainstorming sessions to refining your script’s final draft. As a result, you’ll emerge more confident, savvy, and ready to script ads that don’t just sell but tell a story.
ChatGPT is an awesome brainstorming buddy (it’s always on, never runs out of ideas, and never drinks your coffee☕🤖). But here’s the catch – it’s definitely not the be-all and end-all. We’ll discuss why keeping the human touch in the loop is non-negotiable.
But, first thing first!
Before we talk game plan and dive into scripting those video ads for your apps and games, let’s touch on the basics.
Here’s what you need to know before you even begin writing your script:
- Your app/game: You gotta know the product you’re marketing like the back of your hand. What is the USP (Unique Selling Point) of your app/game? What are the main differentiator? What makes it tick? What keeps your users/play coming back? All of this will guide your video production process.
- Your target audience: Picture the folks who just can’t get enough of your app or game. Who are they? What gets them excited? They’re not just stats; they’re real folks with likes, dislikes, and late-night snack cravings. The more you get them, the more they’ll get your app or game.
- The video concept: Concept is King! Before you even think about putting pen to paper, you need a rock-solid concept. So, what’s the vibe? What’s the story you’re telling in your video?
P.S. If you need some tips on how to get all these ducks in a row, check out our article on the nitty-gritty of concepting your video ads, understanding your game or app inside out, pinpointing that killer message, and zeroing in on who you’re talking to.

Writing a script for a UGC video for a mobile game using ChatGPT
So let’s say you’ve nailed all this down: you know your app/game, you know whom you’re speaking to, you’ve got your concept, and you’re ready to write the script for a UGC video with the help of ChatGPT.
Here’s the step-by-step process, using a (fictional) merge-3 game Mystic Elements as an example.
P.S. In this guide, we’ll focus on using a simple chat (thread) within GPT-4. In one of our following articles, we’ll walk you through doing all this by building your own custom GPT.
1) Get access to GPT-4
First, you’ll need to get a ChatGPT Plus account if you don’t already have one.
This gives you access to GPT-4, the most capable model, and vastly superior to the free GPT 3.5 version when it comes to creative capabilities, character limit, consistency, and speed.
Sure, you can tinker around with the free GPT 3.5 version – it’s cool for a test drive. But let’s be real: if you’re gunning for that scriptwriting gold, you need the best tools in your arsenal.
2) Start a new chat
If you’ve already brainstormed ideas for one particular game in a previous chat, feel free to pick up where you left off.
But if it’s a brand-new project, start a brand-new thread, to keep your socks sorted. Avoid using the same chat for multiple games/apps.
P.S. Thread carefully. Threads in ChatGPT can get complex – the longer you keep going, the more confused ChatGPT can get.
If your conversation starts to feel like a maze, take a step back, summarize what you’ve got, and kick off a new thread with that summary.
3) Feed the AI all the relevant info
Include all the information you have, including the game description, the target audience, and the video concept.
Do this in separate prompts/steps (the so-called multi-prompting approach), to get the optimal output without confusing ChatGPT.
Of course, be mindful of all the applicable data and privacy policies.
The good rule of thumb is the ”Reddit rule” – if you wouldn’t post it anonymously on Reddit, don’t put it in ChatGPT. Keep it cool, keep it safe.
4) Prompt the script
Alrighty, you’ve got ChatGPT up to speed with the basics.
Now, it’s showtime.
This is where you need to get into the nitty-gritty. Think about:
- Where’s it all happening? Indoors, outdoors, in a quirky cafe, or in a cozy living room? Match the location with your budget and concept vibe.
- Who’s starring? How many people? Maybe specify the actors’ genders if that’s key to your concept.
- Keep an eye on the clock. Most ads are snappy – between 15 and 30 seconds. So, plan your script accordingly.
- Any other crucial bits? Like special requests from clients or those pesky legal details?
Keep it simple, and don’t include parameters unless they’re absolutely necessary, as you’ll be limiting your options.
Of course, sometimes you’ll want to limit your options to nail the script, e.g. when you’re specifying the tone & language. Different audiences speak and think differently – you’re not going to talk to the hyper-casual Gen Z crowd the same way as to boomer moms, or business professionals. By specifying your audience, you allow ChatGPT to adapt its language, slang, and even humor to match your viewers’ vibe.
Notice how we use the ”Act as” prompt to direct ChatGPT to act as a specific expert, so its responses could be as targeted and specialized as possible. When you prompt ChatGPT with “act as a scriptwriting expert” or “you are a professional scriptwriter,” you’re essentially giving it a role to play and this keeps it in the zone. It sticks to the script (pun intended!) and maintains the voice and style you need.
5) Review & regenerate
Alright, so you’ve got your first draft script from ChatGPT. Now, don’t just sit there gawking at it! Dive into the fine-tuning phase.
Even if you’re happy with the first draft, you may be even happier with the second one, so ask ChatGPT for multiple script versions – prompts like “Give me another version and make it more interesting,” or “Now give me a version with a humorous twist” can work wonders.
If the first draft isn’t quite hitting the mark, don’t be shy to give feedback. Be specific about what you want to change. Is it the tone, the pacing, or the style? ChatGPT is a quick learner, and with your guidance, it can iterate towards the close-to-perfect script.
You’ve got two options in this case:
- Edit your previous prompt
- Write another prompt
Editing your previous prompt is like hitting the reset button with some new insights.
But if you drop a new prompt instead, ChatGPT keeps all the old details in mind while it cooks up something new.
Remember that ChatGPT considers the entire conversation, not just the last message. Giving ChatGPT a new prompt when something’s wrong with the previous input/output can keep you in a repetitive loop. So if you notice the conversation went way off course, just go back and edit one of your previous prompts.
TL;DR – pick your strategy depending on whether you want a complete overhaul or just some added spice.
6) Rewrite
Once you’re satisfied with the ChatGPT output, it’s time to rewrite.
Ernest Hemingway once said, ”The only kind of writing is rewriting,” and yeah, that goes double for AI-generated content.
ChatGPT is smart, but it can’t beat your instincts and experience. It’s here to bounce ideas and fuel your creativity, not to call the shots.
It doesn’t understand your brand’s unique voice, the latest trends, or the subtle cultural nuances like you do, so you still need to give the script a thorough review and edit it to bring in the emotional depth, and that little sprinkle of soul & personality.
You’re the artist; ChatGPT is just your fancy tool.
While you can’t count on ChatGPT to understand emotional nuances, you can 100% count on it to proofread your version of the script for grammar, syntax, and spelling errors. Paste the final version of the script with the prompt: ”Act as a scriptwriting expert and proofread the following script for any grammar, syntax, or spelling mistakes. List any errors and improvement suggestions in a separate bullet list.” The ”separate bullet list” detail makes it easier to see where the errors are exactly.
PRO TIP: The best way to review your script is to read it out loud. You’ll catch awkward phrasings, long-winded sentences, and get a real feel for the length, the rhythm and flow.
7) A/B tests & variations
Crafting multiple script variations manually can be a time-guzzler, but with ChatGPT, you can quickly produce different script variations for A/B testing by changing:
- The hook
- The setting
- The tone
- The CTA, etc.
Experiment with different opening lines or scenarios. If your script features characters, switch up their dialogues or roles. Go bold, go subtle, or go totally out of left field. See which character-driven narrative scores higher engagement in your A/B tests.
Remember, this AI buddy is here to kickstart your creativity, not to replace the irreplaceable – your unique human touch. As you weave your storytelling magic, let ChatGPT be the sidekick that provides the extra zing to your script.
